Blog #1 - Rain Doesn't Stop Photography

The day started with a beautiful sunrise. Dorothy would know, as every morning she climbed the stairs to the roof of The Foxberry, camera in hand. She wanted to capture as many sunrises as possible before leaving for college so that she could make her mom a collage. It took some commitment to wake up that early, but she couldn’t stop once she started. She was determined, and nothing could change that.

Once she got her perfect shot, she allowed herself some time to feel the wind against her cheek and the steady increase of light in the sky. Dorothy was always so busy with photography, helping out around the apartment, and school that she didn’t often give herself a moment to relax. It was nice to just embrace the world around her and to let all her worries slip from her mind.

While looking over the horizon, she could see dark clouds form and creep towards the town. She always hated the rain, because it limited her ability to take the outdoor pictures she was familiar with and loved. On rainy days, she couldn’t walk around the town to observe the people she had only recently begun to know. She moved there only 1 year before, at the start of her junior year in highschool.

The only person that Dorothy really took the time to get to know was Old Man Jenkins. He was in the same spot at the park everyday, playing his game of chess. She wondered where he would play his game today due to the rain. As she thought about it, Dorothy left the roof and headed down the many flights of stairs towards the lobby. There, she found a half played chess board and Jenkins working on the fountain. It was then that she was able to see the potential in this scene for her photography.

It wasn’t a setup she was used to and it didn’t have the natural lighting that being outside does, but this moment had character. Dorothy’s photography created physical memories, and the visual of Jenkins working on the broken fountain with a chess board nearby created a little memory she didn’t want to forget. It was a challenge to capture the perfect image, but she knew it would help her grow. She then thought to herself that maybe the rain couldn’t limit her photography after all.
